How to do a telephone line checkDo you have a noisy line or crackling line Does your internet keep dropping out Have you contacted your telephone provider yet - Then Dont unless you want to be on the phone for ages and you may need to learn another language first. Remember that your telephone service provider are responsible for the incoming line to your house and if there is a problem with line coming to your house then it will transfer to all the telephone extensions in your house. The way you determine if the fault is your end or the suppliers end is like this. First you will need to find the telephone master box which will be the first box coming from the telephone suppliers line could be under ground or overhead wiring. Once you have found the main telephone box (usually called NTE5) and looks like this below. If you main telephone box does not look like or have the removable panel at the bottom then you can not perform this telephone line test.
To determine if the fault is you end or the suppliers end remove the front panel as shown be careful as there may be wires conected to it which will be feeding your telephone extensions Next plug your telephone or broadband into the test socket Testing the line in the test socket eliminates all the extensions in your house giving you only the incoming line from the telephone provider. Results If your phone is clear with no noise on the line ( call some one to check ) then the telephone suppliers end is fine and the problem is your end usually faulty extension cables or boxes If you are still getting a noisy line or crackling line when plugged into the test socket then you can guarantee it is the suppliers end at fault you need to ring them straight away to inform them of the problem. Be prepared to be on the phone for ages and get passed from pillar to post and last of all get ready for them to deny that there is a problem at all.
